Central African Republic: Muslim militia attacks church-run refugee camp

According to Orthodox Christian Initiative for Africa in 2016, “in the Central African Republic there are very few Orthodox Christians. In 2008 some were baptized and they had three priests (or only one). We do not know what their present situation is. The Central African Republic, like so many other countries in our troubled, beloved Africa, is tormented by poverty and violence. What happened to the Orthodox Christians our brothers who live there? I would like to find out….We pray that Jesus Christ, the God of Love, will protect and bless the Orthodox Church in that country, as well as all its people. The Orthodox Church of the Central African Republic belongs to the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Metropolis of Cameroon, which is struggling as best it can to help the people of these countries.”

“Another Attack on a CAR Refugee Camp by UPC,” International Christian Concern, December 11, 2018:

12/11/2018 CAR (International Christian Concern) – Attacks on church run refugee camps continued in the Central African Republic last week. The Unité pour la Paix en Centrafrique(UPC), a Muslim militia in CAR, has often targeted Christian populations, including churches who are helping displaced people in the country. Last week, on Tuesday, December 4, the group attacked a small church hosting IDPs in the city of Ippy. There have not been clear reports on the total number of people killed or injured during the attack however. The church, Saint Xavier, was giving shelter to many of those who have fled from other areas that have been in conflict.

This attack took place mere weeks after a larger attack was conducted on camp in the town of Alindao. During this attack, 60 people were killed and many of these refugees had to flee again….

This conflict started in 2013, when a group called Seleka, a muslim militia, overthrew the government of CAR. Since then, Ex-seleka forces and militias called anti-balaka, have continued to fight each other. There have been constant attacks on both muslim and Christian civilians in the fighting, which has made this country one of the most destabliled [sic] in the world.
