Department of Religious Education Director and Archon National Commander to be speakers at Greater Philadelphia Symposium, April 21

With the blessings of His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey, the Order of Saint Andrew, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the Philadelphia region will be hosting its fourth annual symposium entitled, “Paschal Iconography: Pascha to Pentecost, Visions of Renewed Faith and Renewed Life” and “The Ecumenical Patriarchate: The Quest for Religious Freedom.” The symposium will be held at Saint Sophia, Ss Faith, Hope and Agape Greek Orthodox Church in Jeffersonville, PA, April 21, 2012.

Anthony J. Limberakis, M.D., National Commander of the Order of Saint Andrew, will be the guest speaker for the first half of the symposium.

National Commander Limberakis will offer updates on the very latest developments from meetings with government officials and religious leaders in Warsaw during the Order’s recent ‘Religious Freedom Mission’ to the European Union. He will also highlight the historic visit of Vice President Joseph Biden to the Phanar, the International Archon Religious Freedom Conference in Brussels, Belgium, and recent developments surrounding President Barack Obama’s public call to reopen Halki Seminary.

Anton C. Vrame, Ph.D., Director of the Department of Religious Education for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, will be the guest speaker for the second half of the symposium.

Dr. Anton C. Vrame, Director of the Department of Religious Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and Associate Professor at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology will present the icons of the Paschal season. By looking at the images of the Resurrection and the Sundays after Easter, the presentation will explore the meaning and implications of the Resurrection for the Orthodox Christian. We will see statements about faith, healing, and life. Because the Paschal season is so closely connected to the Sacrament of Baptism, we will  begin to see the ongoing reflection of the Church on the meaning of Baptism. In addition, the presentation will explain the “visual language” of icons, how details in the icons reveal the experience and teachings of the Church.

His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey will also be offering his personal reflections on icons pertaining to the Paschal season and will provide his perspective to conclude the day.

The symposium is open to all Archons, their spouses, and other Orthodox faithful interested in the religious freedom pursuit for the Ecumenical Patriarchate. A detailed itinerary can be found below and further questions for information can be directed to Dr. Cary Limberakis at 215-643-3347 or cjldmd@verizon.net.
