The Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate will present a staged performance based on the destruction of Smyrna in 1922, one of the most tragic religious genocides in history. A Short History of Anger: A Hybrid Work of Poetry and Theatre will be presented on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 7:15PM EDT at the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine in lower Manhattan, organized by Regional Commanders George A. Tsougarakis, and Nikiforos Mathews of the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of New Jersey and the Direct Archdiocesan District.
A little more than 100 years ago, the Turkish military captured the city of Smrynra and destroyed it in a great fire that killed as many as 125,000 people, many of them Greek Orthodox Christians, generations of whom had lived in the city since ancient times. A Short History of Anger retells this tragic story combining prose and poetry, essay and verse and employing a modern-day Greek Chorus. It is a moving and compelling performance that is not to be missed.
