Philadelphia Area Archons Present A Symposium on the Ecumenical Patriarchate During the Ottoman Period and the Smyrna Catastrophe of 1922

With the blessings and presence of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, the Archons of Greater Philadelphia will present a symposium on the life of the Ecumenical Patriarchate during the Ottoman period, as well as on the history and legacy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the ethnic cleansing of the Greek community in Smyrna in 1922.

On November 19 at Saint Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, the Symposium will begin with a light breakfast at 8:30AM. At 9AM, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros will offer the invocation and opening remarks. Then Archon Cary J. Limberakis, Regional Commander for the Metropolis of New Jersey, will welcome attendees and introduce the featured speaker, Archon Tom Papademetriou, Ph.D. Archon Papademetriou will offer two presentations: “The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Under the Ottomans” and “The Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Great Catastrophe of 1922: History and Legacy.”

Archon Tom Papademetriou is Professor of Historical Studies, Constantine & Georgiean Georgiou Professor of Greek History and Director of the Dean C. and Zoë Pappas Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies at Stockton University in Galloway, New Jersey. Both of the sessions will be followed by a question-and-answer period. The Symposium is free and open to the public, but please RSVP to Archon Cary Limberakis at ArchonCJL@gmail.com.
