Nicaragua is 50% Roman Catholic and 33% evangelical Protestant. Many Catholics and evangelicals are being targeted by the regime of Marxist strongman Daniel Ortega as “coup plotters” and “enemies of the regime.”
“Nicaraguan dictatorship bans priests from anointing the sick in hospitals,” Catholic Weekly, November 18, 2024:
People hospitalised in Nicaragua can no longer receive the anointing of the sick. This is the latest measure of the Ortega regime, where priests are being prohibited from visiting public hospitals to administer the sacrament. Nicaraguan lawyer in exile, Martha Patricia…recently told local media La Prensa that the clergy are “under surveillance” and that the police are “besieging” them. One priest had to flee the country after receiving death threats…. According to the latest report by the NGO “Nicaragua Never Again,” the Ortega regime has shut down over 1,200 religious entities. The report describes the government’s actions as the worst repression of the Catholic Church in the history of Nicaragua.
