On December 3, 2021, the Southampton Business Alliance named Archon Dr. Peter Michalos its 2021 Person of the Year. This honor came just over two weeks after Archon Michalos was presented the Distinguished Colleague Award by the Hellenic Medical Society of New York. Archon Michalos has received these honors in recognition of his remarkable expertise in combating the Covid-19 pandemic, and his heroic efforts to eradicate this deadly disease.

The executive director of the Southampton Business Alliance, Sheryl Heather, thanked Dr. Michalos for “his contributions for the Health of our Township.” Victoria Schneps-Yunis, the founder and president of Schneps Media, hailed Archon Peter as “the ophthalmologist and philanthropist extraordinaire who has an enormous impact and is devoted to his Southampton community….’Dr. Pete,’ as we like to call him, was honored for his endless help during the COVID-19 crisis in bringing lifesaving equipment to Southampton Hospital. He found what no one else could get from masks, to ventilators, to hand sanitizers. He continues to raise money for defibrillators and more lifesaving equipment for the Southampton Village Police Department. His scholarships have helped endless numbers of local students go to nursing school.”

Dr. Michalos has put defribrillators in all the Southampton town and village police cars, along with trauma kits. He was responsible for the first free Covid testing center in the Hamptons, which opened during the height of the pandemic. He recommended a mask order for all indoor activities in March to the mayor of Southampton, who signed the first emergency mask order in New York state. Dr. Michalos was honored with the community service award for 2020 by Southampton village, and was chosen as person of the year for 2021 by the Southampton Village Police Department’s Police Benevolent Association, where he has served as Southampton village police surgeon for the last 15 years.
