Archon Congressman Gus M. Bilirakis will host a Hellenic Caucus briefing on “The Importance of the Halki Seminary for International Religious Freedom” November 20 in Rayburn 2325. This event will highlight the significance of the Halki Seminary to the Orthodox Christian faith and the plight of religious freedom in the region. It will also feature remarks by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America; Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis, National Commander of the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in America; and Dr. Elizabeth H. Prodromou, Affiliate Scholar at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University and former Commissioner and Vice-Chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.
“I am proud to be hosting these distinguished champions of religious freedom on Capitol Hill,” said Bilirakis. “As the leader of nearly 300 million Orthodox Christians, the Ecumenical Patriarch has a long history of reaching out to and working for peace and reconciliation among all faiths, including Christians, Jews and Muslims. Turkey must abide by the basic tenets of international law, which secures religious rights for all citizens and institutions, and allow the Halki Seminary to open without pre-conditions or further delay.”
