George Behrakis

George Behrakis of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell, MA, was invested as Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1979 and conferred with the offikion Depoutatos. He was essential in coordinating the arrangements for honoring the last President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, as the Founding Director of the Gorbachev Foundation of North America, with the Athenagoras Human Rights Award in 2005.

Archon Behrakis serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. He has served as president of his home parish. He was vice chairman of Hellenic College-Holy Cross School of Theology and chairman of Leadership 100. He was also the force behind the establishment of the Saint Methodios Faith and Heritage Center-Metropolis of Boston Camp and Retreat Center in Contoocook, NH.

During his business career, Archon Behrakis, Chairman of Gainsborough Investments, has distinguished himself in the pharmaceutical industry as a researcher and marketer of asthma and allergy products. He is the founder of the companies: Dooner Laboratories and Muro Pharmaceutical, Inc.

As part of his philanthropic ministry, Archon Behrakis has funded The George D. & Margo Behrakis Wing for Greek and Roman Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the George D. Behrakis Chair in the Field of Targeted Pharmaceuticals at Northeastern University. He has also established the George D. Behrakis Hellenic Fellowship in Respiratory Allergy at the John Hopkins Asthma & Allergy Center and the Behrakis Fellowship in cardiovascular research supporting Greek physicians from Greece at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Archon Behrakis and his wife Margo have been married for fifty years and reside in North Tewksbury, MA. They are parents of Drake married to Maria, of Joanna married to Peter, of Stephanie married to Thanasi, and of Elena married to David, and have nine grandchildren: George, Zoe, and Demetri; Christian and Marissa; Margo and Constantine; and Sebastian and Kaliope.
