It is with deep sorrow that I share the news that Archon George Triantafilos Loutsion, Sr. of Canonsburg, PA, Archon Deputatos of the Great and Holy Church of Christ, fell asleep in the Lord on February 19, 1980, at the age of 77. Archon George was invested with the title of Depoutatos in 1975.
A devoted son of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, a distinguished businessman, philanthropist, and faithful servant of the Orthodox Church, Archon Loutsion leaves behind an enduring legacy of faith, generosity, and service to the Church, his community, and his ancestral homeland of Rhodes, Greece.
Born in 1903 in Koskinou, Rhodes, Archon Loutsion eventually established his home in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, where he became a respected business and community leader. He was the owner of Loutsion Packing Company, Inc., in Canonsburg, as well as Homestead Packing and Provision Company in Hays, Pennsylvania.
Throughout his life, Archon Loutsion demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the Orthodox Christian faith, particularly through his extraordinary service to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Canonsburg. He served in numerous leadership capacities, including Parish Council President, member of the Parish Board of Advisors, Chairman of the Building Committee, and Chairman of the 1955 Consecration Committee. He also served as a parish chanter (Psalti), contributing his voice and devotion to the liturgical life of the Church.
Recognized as a Great Benefactor of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church and its Greek School program, Archon Loutsion understood the importance of preserving the Orthodox faith, Hellenic heritage, and traditions for future generations.
His dedication extended beyond his local parish to the wider Church. He served on the Diocese Council and received the Diocese of Pittsburgh’s Outstanding Service Award in recognition of his contributions. He was also honored with the prestigious Medal of Saint Paul by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
In 1975, in recognition of his exceptional service and devotion to the Mother Church, he was invested as an Archon Deputatos of the Ecumenical Patriarchate by Archbishop Iakovos in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. This distinguished honor reflected his lifelong commitment to the sacred mission of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the preservation of Orthodox Christianity.
A proud Greek American, Archon Loutsion was actively involved in numerous Hellenic organizations, including AHEPA Chapter 156, the Pan-Rhodian Society Apollon Chapter 24, and the Kleovoulos Society of Koskinou, Rhodes.
His philanthropic spirit was equally evident in his service to the broader community. As a member of the Canonsburg Planning Commission, he worked to improve the community he called home. Among his many charitable contributions were his support of Canonsburg General Hospital and the donation of Loutsion Ball Field to the Canonsburg community.
Never forgetting his roots, Archon Loutsion also extended his generosity to his birthplace of Koskinou, Rhodes, where he funded the renovation of the village elementary school and provided farming equipment to benefit the local community. These acts of kindness exemplified his profound love for his ancestral homeland and his desire to improve the lives of others.
Archon Loutsion was married to Kula Kusturiss Loutsion and was the father of four children: George T. Loutsion, Jr.; Nicholas G. Loutsion, V.M.D.; Katherine Loutsion Pappas; and Florence Loutsion Petros.
Archon George Triantafilos Loutsion, Sr., will be remembered as a man whose life embodied the highest ideals of Orthodox Christian stewardship, philanthropy, and service. His devotion to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, his beloved parish, and the communities of Canonsburg and Koskinou stands as a lasting testament to a life dedicated to faith, family, and the common good.
May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ grant eternal rest to His faithful servant George, and may his memory be eternal.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” –Timothy 4:5-8
