His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros Presides at Investiture of 47 New Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate

Following the Divine Liturgy at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York City on Sunday, October 18, 2026, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate presided at the Investiture of forty-seven new Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate from throughout the United States. Assisting the Archbishop were His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco, His Eminence Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh, His Eminence Metropolitan-elect Athenagoras of New Jersey, and His Grace Bishop Nektarios of Diokleia.

The Investiture was the crowning event of the annual Archon Weekend of the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The newly invested Archons, like their distinguished brethren, have dedicated themselves to the protection of the Holy Mother Church of Constantinople.

Addressing the new Archons, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros stated: “Today we welcome nearly 50 new Archons into the Order of Saint Andrew the First-Called, joining a noble fraternity that has stood for 60 years as a steadfast guardian of our Mother Church of Constantinople. Archons-elect, the titles you receive today are not merely honorary. They are sacred inheritances reaching back through the centuries. When these same offikia distinguished those who served the imperial court in the Great Church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. Today, revived by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, these offikia signify something far greater than worldly authority. They stand as a solemn commitment to faith, commitment to service, and commitment to sacrifice. Each of you has been personally approved, and your title has been personally chosen and bestowed by His All-holiness our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.”

His Eminence continued: “The candles you hold, like those carried by the monastics at their tonsure, these candles symbolize the light of your calling, and the light of your transformation that begins today. Beloved soon-to-be Archons, today you receive more than a title. You receive a new identity. A new responsibility, and above all, a sacred mission. And the one who calls you to this transformation is none other than the Ecumenical Patriarch himself, personally. In this sense, our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew becomes your Spiritual Father and Godfather today.”

“There is profound meaning,” His Eminence explained, “in the offikion chosen for each of you. Even the very word Archon, dating back to ancient Greece, signifies the one entrusted with authority. Yet Christian authority is never an entitlement. It is a responsibility to be exercised for the good of others, and of course for the glory of God. To be an Archon of the Great Church of Christ is to stand courageously in defense of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, its sacred prerogatives, its canonical order, and its unwavering moral witness to the world.

His Eminence told the Archons-elect: “You are the vanguard of the Orthodox laity. Where your predecessors once served an earthly empire, you are now called to serve the spiritual mission of the first throne of Orthodoxy, strengthening the witness of the Mother Church, witness for the peace of the world and for the salvation of souls. Therefore, embrace your new identity with courage, but also with conviction. Stand tall for your faith. Stand firm for your Church, and never hesitate to speak on behalf of the Great Church, in season and out of season. Fight the good fight. Fight for peace, for justice, for righteousness, and for the sacred inheritance entrusted to your care. May the Lord strengthen you to fulfill this noble calling, so that, having finished the course of your lives, you may stand before the Lord as faithful and worthy servants.”

During the solemn Archon Investiture service, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, with His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos, His Eminence Metropolitan Savas, and His Eminence Metropolitan-elect Athenagoras, presented each Archon with the Cross of Saint Andrew, along with the official Patriarchal Certificate specifying the offikion designated by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, as His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros had noted, for each Archon.
