Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew met with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis during his visit to Athens, Greece, Thursday, October 30, 2008. Also attending the meeting was Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis. while the Ecumenical Patriarch was accompanied by Metropolitan John of Pergamon.

Afterwards, His All Holiness met with His Eminence Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece. "We ascertained your wisdom, simplicity and love for the Church," Ieronymos said, reassuring the Ecumenical Patriarch "that all of us will provide our forces, however, small they are to the Patriarchate’s mission."
