Ecumenical Patriarch Meets with UN Secretary-General at United Nations Headquarters

Continuing his Apostolic Visit to the United States on Thursday, September 18, 2025, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the United Nations Headquarters.

Accompanying His All-Holiness were His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America; the Hierarchs and other members of the Patriarchal delegation; and the Spiritual Advisor of the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Rev. Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne Alexander Karloutsos.

The meeting was warm and constructive, with discussions focusing on dialogue between peoples, religions, and cultures, as well as shared initiatives for peace and care for the natural environment.

His All-Holiness has previously praised Secretary-General Guterres for his environmental initiatives, writing to him: “We are encouraged by the work that Your Excellency has done to combat climate change during your tenure as Secretary-General of the United Nations.”
