Annual Archon General Assembly held at New York Hilton

Prior to the Archon assembly, a special joint breakfast meeting with National Council members and Regional Commanders from all over the country was held to discuss the various Religious Freedom initiatives of the Order.

On Saturday, October 27, 2007, the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in America under the leadership of Archbishop Demetrios, Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate held their annual General Assembly at the Hilton Hotel in New York, NY.

Prior to the assembly, His Eminence, Metropolitan Nicholas of Amissos (Carpatho-Russian Diocese) offered the invocation at a special joint breakfast meeting with National Council members and Regional Commanders from all over the country. The various Religious Freedom initiatives of the Order were reviewed. Religious Freedom Committee Chairman Archon John A. Catsimatidis, Archon Andrew E. Manatos and Archon Stephen Georgeson spoke on certain components of the Archon Religious Freedom Campaign. Archon Constantine G. Caras, Esq. and George Kaludis, PhD offered an update on the Archon religious freedom presentations before the Helsinki Commission’s Annual Human Rights Conference in Warsaw, Poland (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) before its 55 member nations. The Regional Commanders reports were heard among other Committee reports during the morning session.

His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios of America addressing the women gathered at the Order of St. Andrew Ladies’ Tea Reception.

That afternoon, The Order of St. Andrew sponsored a Ladies’ Tea Reception for all wives, family members and honored guests of the Archons and Archons-elect. Dr. Maria A. Limberakis, the wife of the National Commander who hosted the event welcomed Archbishop Demetrios who spoke on the significance of the Archon offikion. Director of the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty, offered a powerpoint presentation on homelessness and poverty in America and the various programs sponsored by the National Law Center addressing this crisis.

Following registration and luncheon with Archbishop Demetrios, the Archons held their Annual General Assembly in which Archbishop Demetrios offered the invocation and addressed some 150 attendees. [View a letter sent by Archbishop Demetrios (PDF)]

National Commander, Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis welcomed all Archons and Archons-elect to the assembly. Several reports and speeches were heard throughout the afternoon during the Annual Archon General Assembly held at the New York Hilton.

His Excellency Prof. Andonios Trakatellis, MD, PhD, Member and Vice President of the European Parliament, offered remarks on a recent formal resolution passed by the European Parliament regarding the expectations of the EU of Turkey in the area of human rights and religious freedom.

Following Prof. Trakatellis’ remarks, His Excellency Angelos Pangratis, Deputy Head of Delegation to the European Commission to the United States also addressed the Archon Assembly.

Various other reports were heard throughout the afternoon including the reports of the Secretary, Treasurer, Audit Committee, Bylaws Committee, Nominating Committee, Patriarchal Education Committee, Regional Commanders Liaison Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and Technology Committee.

Archon John A. Catsimatidis offered remarks on the Religious Freedom Initiative, while Archon Andrew Manatos offered words on recent developments in Washington.

An extraordinary documentary video presentation entitled, “The Ecumenical Patriarchate at the Precipice of Extinction” was offered by James Rockas, a senior high school student at the Andover Phillips Academy following the reports. [View this video]

His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios concluded the assembly with a memorial service for all departed Archons and offered the Archiepiscopal Charge to the Archons-elect.
